Another fabulous building in Helsinki

Temppeliaukio Church is a Lutheran Church in the Toolo neighborhood of Helsinki. The church was designed by architects and brothers Timo and Tuomo and opened in 1969. Built directly into solid rock, it is also known as the Church of the Rock.

The Temppeliaukio church is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city; half a million people visit it annually. The stone-hewn church is located in the heart of Helsinki. Maintaining the original character of the square is the fundamental concept behind the building. The idiosyncratic choice of form has made it a favourite with professionals and aficionados of architecture.

Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis

Another painted church in the Troodos mountains of Cyprus. The church is the only remains of a 11th century monastery abandoned for unknown reasons in the 17th century. So much incredible art in such a tiny chapel.

Panagia Asinou and the 'Painted Churches' of Cyprus

Far from the Easy Jet English Breakfasts, high in the evergreen Troodos Mountains are a dozen tiny churches. Half hidden in woodland or tucked away in village back streets their spireless pitched roofs and rough stone walls hold beautiful Byzantine frescoes dating back to the thirteenth century.

They take some finding and after negotiating the blind alleys and precipitous mountain roads you usually have to trek around the village to find the priest and the door key. Once inside and after your eyes adapt to the dim dank light the paintings make the church seem twice the size it did from the outside.
