Sitting on a hillside in the village of Compton just outside Guildford in Surrey is Watts Chapel, a masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
I have always thought it would be a great subject for a film. In the years before the First World War local artist Mary Fraser-Tytler, wife of the eminent Victorian artist George Watts offered to build a mortuary chapel for the village. She enlisted the help of over 70 villagers and taught them pottery in evening classes. All the terracotta tiles and decorations were made by Mary and her volunteers.
Mary and George are buried in the chapel grounds as are the visionary author Aldous Huxley and the ground breaking actress Patricia Hayes.
